Concerns raised over proposed development for one thousand new homes in Oakville

Town Councillors recently expressed their concerns at a Planning and Development meeting over a proposed development that would contain over one thousand new homes in north Oakville.

At the start of the meeting, Leigh Musson, Senior Planner, Current Planning – East District, stated that Mattamy (Joshua Creek) Limited had submitted a draft plan subdivision and zoning bylaw amendment application for 1,031 residential units, two neighbourhood parks, an elementary school and two village squares on approximately 60 hectares of land in the Town of Oakville.

According to the presentation, the development, which would be located on the south side of Burnhamthorpe Road East and west of Ninth Line, would contain 687 detached units, 317 street townhouse units, a Catholic elementary school and two parks.

Some concerns raised during the meeting included a discussion revolving around whether there was a requirement that a mixed-use/non-residential building be included on the property.

Councillor Marc Grant expressed concerns about the lack of responses they’ve received in regard to the development and noted that at a public information meeting about the proposal, only one member of the public attended.

“We’ve had no responses to this one development because again, there’s nobody living around there, but the people who live south of these areas will feel the impacts in the future,” said Grant.

Grant also posed the question as to whether there were additional ways to include a larger group of people at the beginning of discussions for future developments.

Additionally, a concern was raised by Councillor Tom Adams, who emphasized the importance of commercial activity on the property.

Following these voiced concerns about the development, the application will be further analyzed by town staff who will follow up with a recommendation on whether or not it should be allowed.
