The Town of Oakville is hoping residents will reflect on “how we can strengthen what unites us” during Canada Day celebrations.

To encourage residents to think about what it means to be Canadian, the Town is doing things a little differently this year while offering plenty of activities to help them enjoy our nation’s birthday safely.

“Canada Day has presented us with the opportunity to acknowledge the work that must go into the diverse and equitable community we strive for,” Mayor Rob Burton said.

“That begins with reflecting on the past, the treaty lands on which we live remind us that Oakville was settled by Indigenous, white and Black settlers who worked together to build a community of harmony and prosperity.”

“We value our on-going relationship with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation,” Burton continued. “ However you choose to recognize Canada Day, I encourage residents to take a moment to reflect on how we can strengthen what unites us and how each of us can work towards creating a community where everyone feels respected and welcomed.”

Oakville residents are invited to take part in this year’s activities, which include:

Tree and flower drive-thru giveaway

Tuesday, June 29 & Wednesday, June 30 from 3 to 7 p.m.

Oakville residents are invited to pick up a native tree, plant or flower and plant it on their property on Canada Day.

To make it safe and easy for residents to participate, the native tree and flower giveaway will be a drive-thru event at one of two locations, while supplies last:

  • Tuesday, June 29 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre
  • Wednesday, June 30 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex

Special giveaways will be offered during the tree, plant and flower pick-up times.

Residents are reminded to follow proper health precautions, including the use of face coverings and to remain in their vehicles at all times. For more event details, please visit the town’s Canada Day page at oakville.ca/events/canada-day.html.

Art in our parks

Public art plays an important role in building community, promoting dialogue and fostering a sense of belonging. From July 1 and throughout summer, residents are invited to engage, explore and be inspired by Oakville’s temporary public art project “ConNextions” at the following local neighbourhood parks:

  • Shell Park, 3307 Lakeshore Road West
  • Westwood Park, 170 Wilson Street
  • Oakville Centre for Performing Arts at Centennial Square, 130 Navy Street
  • Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, 1415 Third Line
  • Memorial Park, 120 Oak Park Boulevard
  • Pondview Pond Walk, 490 Pondview Place
  • Lions Valley Park, 1227 Lions Valley Road

The experience offers unique art installations on display by local emerging and professional artists with strong connections to Oakville.

Please remember to follow Provincial regulations and public health guidelines, such as keeping a two-metre distance from others, and wearing a mask when physical distancing is a challenge. If a park is busy, consider returning at a different time or visiting a different location.
