A 14-year-old boy is facing charges after a gun was seized near a school in the town of Oakville.

At around 5 p.m. yesterday (July 8, 2019) police were contacted in regards to a group of teenagers who were seen near River Oaks Public School in Oakville.

Police say the group was seen by staff at the school as they walked by a window, and that one of the teenagers in the group was seen showing a gun to the other males.

Halton Police went to the scene immediately and arrested four males a short distance from the school.

“A search of the males resulted in the seizure of one unloaded handgun from a backpack,” reads a recent Halton Police news release. “No ammunition was found on any of the males.”

As a result, a 14-year-old male from Oakville was held for bail and has been charged with the following alleged criminal offences.

  • Carry concealed weapon
  • Unauthorized possession of firearm

According to police, the other three males, who were all under 18-years-old, were released without charges. However, due to the ages of the males arrested, police will not be releasing their names.

“There is no ongoing related risk to public safety,” reads the news release. “[The] Investigation has determined the firearm seized was lawfully owned by and registered to a member of the household of the accused.”

Police are now reminding gun owners to ensure the safe and lawful storage of their firearms.

Anyone with further information regarding this incident is asked to contact the 2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4747 ext. 2216.
