If the word ‘lecture’ reminds you of that one dreadful class you had to take in post-secondary, or that lecture you should be currently studying for (no judgement), don’t let our use of it scare you away.

This is one lecture you won’t want to miss and it’s happening right here in Halton.

In Burlington, to be exact.

Burlington, according to a recent press release, is creating an Urban Park Strategy.

This strategy will guide the development of parks in order to align with the city’s Mobility Hubs and a focus on urban growth areas.

The city is inviting residents to attend a public engagement session regarding this strategy.

The session is taking place on Jan. 31, 2019 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the La Salle Pavilion, Main Ball Room, 2nd Level, located at 50 North Shore Blvd., in Burlington.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and despite the event being free, seating will be limited so residents are encouraged to register.

Residents can register for the event here: http://bit.ly/COBParks.

So, what makes this event so special? And why is the city referring to it as a lecture?

The event will start with a keynote from Gil (Guillermo) Penalosa, the Founder and Chair of 8 80 Cities – a non-profit Canadian-based organization that works to bring people together to boost mobility and public spaces in order to build strong communities.

Penalosa’s talk will, according to the press release, focus on the features of great urban parks and public spaces that create a sense of community.

“This is not a time for citizens to be spectators; everyone needs to participate [in] creating a healthy and successful community for all,” Penalosa said in the press release.

“Burlington has a great opportunity as well as responsibility; the city under construction is where many generations will live for hundreds of years. The quality and quantity of parks and other public spaces will have a great impact on citizen’s happiness, regardless of age or background.”

Following the talk, residents will learn about the work the city has currently put toward the Urban Park Strategy.

Residents will also be given the chance to share their ideas on what these parks could look like.
