In support of the city’s LGBTQ community, Burlington will be planning to add rainbow crosswalks to several locations in the city.

In support of the city’s LGBTQ community, Burlington will be planning to add rainbow crosswalks to several locations in the city.
This isn’t the first time this idea has been adopted by a city, with other municipalities across Canada already implementing the plan. The rainbow crosswalks are seen as a way to show support for members of a community who are at an increased risk.

The mayor and several other councillors expressed support for the idea and debated on some locations where the crosswalks could be located. Many councillors also said they would like them in their ward.
“It is something that should be citywide, obviously, and part of the question is, where would you like to put them? Where is the best place?” said Councilor Angelo Bentivegna.
However, some rainbow roads in other communities have had some controversies.
Reported incidents of vandalism have been seen in the past, while some others say the crosswalks are a safety hazard, as the colours can be distracting for some drivers.
Hopefully, the city will be able to address the issues and concerns of some before the walkways are completed.
Council members have requested the crosswalks to be completed before Pride Month (June) in 2020.
