Province places Halton in second least severe COVID category

Halton will fall into the “yellow” area of the province’s new colour-coded COVID-19 response framework.

The classification is the second loosest on the scale of restrictions with a “green” area being the most open scenario. Green is generally in place in rural communities in Ontario. Hamilton will also be placed in the yellow designation.

What being placed in yellow means is that the public and businesses can expect enhanced, targeted enforcement, fines, and enhanced education to limit transmission. Public health measures will be in place in high-risk settings.

However, the designation avoids the stricter restrictions of the “orange” designation which will see increased enforcement on rule breakers as will now be the case in Toronto, Peel and York Regions and Ottawa.

Despite all of the terminology, the change across the board is a general loosening of restrictions for most areas of the province as Premier Doug Ford moves to re-open indoor dining at restaurants and activities at gyms.

The new system will begin on November 7.

As well, as expected, the new measures will also give local health departments more say into what measures can be taken to cope with the coronavirus based on precise local data.
