Police investigation leads to firearm and illegal drug seizure in Burlington

The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has made arrests and laid multiple charges as a result of a lengthy drug investigation that led to a firearm and illegal drug seizure in Burlington.

Police say on May 12, 2021, investigators made a pair of arrests in Burlington and seized a loaded firearm, multiple rounds of ammunition and various illegal drugs.

As a result of the investigation, Derval Mitchell, a 31-year-old from Burlington was arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine (2 counts), possession for the purpose of trafficking – MDMA, possession of property obtained by crime (2 counts), unauthorized possession of a firearm, defaced serial number, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, careless storage (2 counts), contravention of storage regulations (2 counts), unauthorized possession of a prohibited device, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a prohibited device, fail to report lost, stolen, found weapons, weapons dangerous and possession contrary to order (3 counts).

Chavon Douglas, a 28-year-old from Burlington was arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine (2 counts), possession for the purpose of trafficking – MDMA, possession of property obtained by crime (2 counts), unauthorized possession of a firearm, defaced serial number, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, careless storage (2 counts), contravention of storage regulations (2 counts), unauthorized possession of a prohibited device, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a prohibited device, fail to report lost, stolen, found weapons and weapons dangerous.

Douglas was released from custody pending a court appearance in Milton, while Mitchell has been held for a bail hearing, according to police.

This investigation and arrests were conducted by the Burlington Street Crime Unit with the assistance of the 3 District Risk Management Team, Tactical Rescue Unit, K9 Unit and Mobile Surveillance Unit.

Additionally, investigators executed a Criminal Code search warrant on the motor vehicle and residence of the accused.

Investigators also located and seized 57 grams of cocaine, 32 grams of MDMA, and more than $19,000 in cash in addition to the unauthorized firearm, according to police.
