Oakville girl may have died trying to save her horse

An Oakville girl may have died while trying to save her horse.

Reports indicate Zara Buren, 14, was out riding on a path with others near Flamborough on Monday evening when the horse got stuck in a wet, marshy area.

According to reports, as the animal was sinking, the girl was able to dismount and tried to hold his head above the water. She became trapped and a short time later was pulled from the marsh without vital signs. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Social media posts describe Buren as a passionate equestrian who was training to compete at the junior Olympic level.

Horse trainer Holly Jacks-Smither said in a Facebook post, “I can’t put into words the last 12 hours but heaven gained an angel…”

In 2008 her father, Robert Buren, broke his back while cycling and now competes as a para-athlete.

Police continue to investigate.
