Academy Award-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix recently visited Burlington to attend a vigil for Regan Russell, an animal activist who was killed after she was struck by a truck during a demonstration at Fearman’s Pork Plant in June.

In honour of his late wife, activist Mark Russell, continues to stand outside of the slaughterhouse to protest Bill 156 and comfort the pigs who pass by in the trucks.

Phoenix, who is also an animal rights advocate, surprised Russell on Nov. 20, by showing up to the vigil to pay his respects and watch the pig trucks drive by.

In a statement posted to Toronto Pig Save’s Facebook page on June 27, Phoenix said, “Regan Russell spent the final moments of her life providing comfort to pigs who had never experienced the touch of a kind hand.”

“While her tragic death has brought upon deep sorrow in the Animal Save community, we will honour her memory by vigorously confronting the cruelties she fought so hard to prevent by marching with Black Lives, protecting Indigenous rights, fighting for LGBTQ equality and living a compassionate vegan life.”

The video posted to Animal Save Movement’s YouTube page showcases Phoenix’s support at the vigil in honour of Regan Russell.
