Now that significant investment into Oakville’s Ford Assembly Plant has been made, it’s up to the public to buy Canadian-made products to get the economy moving again.

Now that significant investment into Oakville’s Ford Assembly Plant has been made, it’s up to the public to buy Canadian-made products to get the economy moving again.

That was the message delivered by Ontario Premier Doug Ford during his stopover at the Oakville plant today.

Ford was on hand to announce the Provincial government’s commitment of $295 million to help with the re-tooling of the plant for the production of battery powered cars. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also joined in via live stream to say Ottawa will also supply the same amount of money to help with the car production.

Already Ford Canada has announced it will spend $2 billion to make the electric vehicles and keep the jobs in Canada.

Premier Ford stressed the importance of the jobs saying he was impressed by the way two levels of government, the company and unionized workers found common ground to make it happen.

“Ontario’s auto industry is the life blood of so many communities across the province,” said Ford. “When the auto industry prospers, Ontario prospers.”

He pointed out that while the Oakville location employs almost 4,000 people, the auto sector accounts for almost 100,000 jobs in the province.

“That’s why it was so important to make this happen,” he said. “This will support and protect our own auto sector…and support good paying jobs for years to come.”

The Premier went on to say if we can change our buying habits by buying Ontario and Canadian made products, we will keep billions of dollars in our country which will get business back on its feet as the coronavirus takes its toll.

Oakville MP Anita Anand agreed that the economic aspects of this deal are immense, but pointed out how it will help the country’s environment.

She said it is important that Canadians recognize that our natural environment is changing and that bold steps are being taken by the government as it works towards a greener society.

“Congratulations, this is a great day for Oakville and for Canada,” she said.

The Prime Minister said Canadians deserve good jobs and the steps being taken with the car manufacturer makes for secure jobs for thousands of workers while at the same time creating a vehicle that is environmentally friendly.
