Police are warning Halton residents not to fall for this gas inspection phone scam.

According to Halton Regional Police Service, there have been multiple phone calls where female who claims to be from the City of Burlington and demands appointments to attend residences and complete gas line inspections.

“The City of Burlington and Halton Regional Police Service have received over 200 calls concerned about the legitimacy of these inspections from August 4 to August 15, 2017,” said police in a statement.

There have reportedly been several males observed attending residences outside of preset appointment times who do not actually represent the City. The men request to do home energy audits, so you’ll want to be wary of this, too.

Thus far, they have been denied entry into the homes they have attended and left when directed to do so.

“The City of Burlington and Union Gas employees do not go door-to-door unless in an emergency situation and would often be with the Halton Regional Police Service or Burlington Fire Department,” said police.

Police are reminding residents to be vigilant about who they speak to on the phone and any companies they contract for service. Remember to always ask questions, review and receive a written contract for products and services, and only deal with reputable companies.

The City of Burlington is working with the Halton Regional Police Service, Halton Region, Union Gas and media outlets, to ensure that residents are aware of these fraudulent calls.

Anyone who receives a fraudulent call or visit is asked to call police.

Further, Union Gas has stated that they don’t sell natural gas appliances or provide maintenance services for natural gas appliances.

If you receive a call from a person who claims to be from the City of Burlington or Union Gas offering to undertake a natural gas inspection at your home, please be advised this is not a legitimate Union Gas program.  If you do receive a call, contact Union Gas directly at 1-888-774-3111 to verify this information.
