From large-scale pieces to modern and whimsical scales, feedback is being sought on public art in Burlington for the Public Art Master Plan (PAMP).

From large-scale pieces to modern and whimsical scales, feedback is being sought on public art in Burlington for the Public Art Master Plan (PAMP).

“We have a beautiful city with Lake Ontario, the Niagara Escarpment and our rural area, so it is important to add other beautification pieces that can become landmarks, discussion pieces or even community gathering spaces,” said interim director of city building Bill Janssen.

“It’s even more important that as an engaging city, we are asking residents for their thoughts and feelings on public art.”

Results will be filed in a report and presented to council in the spring.

Residents are invited to provide feedback through a standard online survey and through a mapping tool to show where they’d like to see public art.

They can also attend one of four public drop-in sessions.

The online tools can be found at burlingtonpublicart.com/master-plan-review and will be open until Feb. 2.

“As we continue to develop the public art program in 2018 and beyond, it is essential that the PAMP be updated to continue to reflect and serve the community,” said manager of arts and culture Angela Paparizo.

“This is especially true given Burlington’s changing demographics and shift from a suburban to urban community and is linked to the strategic goal of creating an engaging city.”

The PAMP provides a 10-year plan for integrating art into the public spaces. It’s a roadmap for the community — a vision for how public art can enhance Burlington’s public places, architecture, and landscapes — and a set of processes to put that plan into action, according to the city.

It addresses art, which is owned by the City of Burlington and located in public spaces. “Public space” means municipally-owned spaces used by the public, including parks, road allowances, tunnels, boulevards, streets, courtyards, squares, bridges, building exteriors, foyers, concourses and publicly accessible indoor areas.

The works may be permanent, temporary or mobile.

The PAMP distinguishes and provides guidance for the Public Art Program for the City of Burlington.

Goals of the project

  • Assess public’s receptiveness, awareness and support for public art.
  • Review and update current list of potential public art sites and projects.
  • Identify and prioritize opportunities for new projects; explore methods to more directly link project planning to annual budgeting process.
  • Plan and prioritize project scope and scale in accordance with the Public Art Reserve Fund.
  • Clarify policies surrounding temporary public art and community-driven art projects.
  • Explore the need for a policy surrounding integrated public art projects/embedded artists within city-led projects.
