A Canada-wide public awareness test is being distributed today.

A Canada-wide public awareness test is being distributed today.

This public awareness test is being conducted in order to test the Alert Ready Emergency Alert System – the country’s emergency alerting system. This system works to deliver critical alerts to Canadians via radio, television, and LTE-connected and compatible devices.

This test will be conducted at 1:55 p.m. local time (EST) and, as noted, will be distributed on TV, the radio, and compatible mobile devices.

To see if your mobile device is compatible, visit the Alert Ready website here

According to the Alert Ready website, “The Alert Ready system was developed with many partners, including federal, provincial and territorial emergency management officials, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Pelmorex, the broadcasting industry and wireless service providers.”

The Alert Ready Emergency Alert System broadcasts environmental alerts, natural alerts (such as a tornado), fire alerts, terrorist alerts, civil emergencies, biological emergencies, hazardous alerts, and admin alerts (test messages that are either issued for public awareness or technical testing purposes).

When an alert is issued, the public is advised to stop, listen, and respond as directed by the government issuer.

Alternate forms of alerts are available for individuals who may be visually or hearing impaired. However, Alert Ready notes that not every alerting authority or device has the ability to produce or receive these formats.
