Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward recently expressed her concerns over the way residents are reporting social gatherings in the city after the province’s latest COVID-19 restrictions were announced.

In a recent interview, Meed Ward told inhalton.com‘s Khaled Iwamura, that the city’s bylaw officers have been attempting to keep gatherings under control.

Meed Ward went on to advise those who would like to report gatherings, to do so by calling the COVID-19 hotline directly and not to post videos of them to social media.

“If you see a problem, the best thing to do is not to post a TikTok video or something on social. The best thing to do is call the COVID hotline,” she said, adding that it helps the city solve issues in “real-time.”

“It doesn’t do any good to send me the video three days after it happened because I can’t solve that.”

Meed Ward also cautioned the public to avoid making quick judgements when making reports.

“I also would caution people to be very careful about what they think they are observing. We have blended families,” she said, “We have racially-blended families, we have adopted kids; so what you think might be a community free-for-all, may still be a household gathering.”

Meed Ward concluded by emphasizing the fact that park ambassadors and bylaw officers are doing regular patrols in the community and that those who would like to report a gathering may do so by calling the COVID-19 hotline.
