Burlington committee votes to recommend installation of six new rainbow crosswalks

Burlington’s Community Planning, Regulation and Mobility (CPRM) Committee recently voted to recommend the installation of six new Rainbow Crosswalks in the city over 2021 and 2022.
In an interview with inhalton.com‘s Khaled Iwamura, Mayor Marianne Meed Ward confirmed that a total of three new crosswalks have been approved for this year.
Additionally, the mayor stated that an additional three crosswalks, that would be installed next year, will be discussed in the fall during budget deliberations.
Last month, the city conducted a survey to gather feedback from the community to find out where they would want rainbow crosswalks to be located.
The Mayor revealed that one of the locations for the new rainbow crosswalk will be at the intersection of Fairview St. and Drury Ln.
“The top location is Fairview and Drury,” said Meed Ward. “The vast majority of people selected that location by a long shot.”

Meed Ward mentioned that while this location is a very busy intersection, it happens to be right near the Halton Catholic District School Board administrative offices.
Additionally, she confirmed that there were over 4,100 people who responded to the survey.
According to Meed Ward, the survey resulted in a wide range of respondents across wards and different demographics and about 90 per cent were Burlington residents.
While there were motions to bring the program from six crosswalks to two and one, the mayor said she “didn’t support that.”
“We need to show as much love in as many places as we can,” concluded Meed Ward.
The final vote is set to take place at council on June 22.
