Burlington city council approves 2021 capital budget

The Burlington 2021 capital budget was recently approved at a meeting of City Council.

The 2021 capital budget of  $72.1 million, was approved with a 10-year program of $786.4 million.

According to the budget, 70 per cent of the 10-year program will be invested in infrastructure renewal projects, which include repair, refurbishment or replacement of existing assets to extend useful life, in accordance with the city’s asset management plan.

The 2021 capital budget of $72.1 million includes $27.1 million for roadways, $13.3 million for facilities and buildings, $11.1 million for fleet vehicles, accessories and equipment, $7.9 million for parks and open spaces, $7.7 million for storm water management and $5.1 million for information technology.

Some highlights of the 2021 capital budget include $3.7 million in funding to resurface Plains Road West and add cycling infrastructure and $3 million in funding to renew community centre facilities, including the lap pool at Mountainside Pool located at 2205 Mount Forest Dr.

Additionally, $1 million in funding will continue the development of park amenities at City View Park, located at 2500 Kerns Rd. and $4.9 million in funding will support ongoing creek erosion control and restoration work.

The review and approval of the proposed 2021 operating budget continues with two key events taking place this week.

The events include a virtual budget town hall with the community on Jan. 20 at 6:00 p.m. as well as an overview of the proposed 2021 operating budget that will be presented at a meeting of Corporate Services, Strategy, Risk and Accountability Committee on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 9:30 a.m.

“The business of the city continues throughout COVID-19, and we continue to invest in services that our Burlington residents expect and need,” said Mayor Marianne Meed Ward.

“This has been a truly difficult budget year. Our City staff did a great job on the 2021 Capital Budget and I thank them for their work. Residents count on us to immediately reinvest the funds you trust us with, back into the community. You expect no less and that is what we have delivered.”
