Burlington City Council recently approved the 2021 Tax Levy Bylaw which will allow the city to bill 2021 property taxes.
The overall property tax increase is 2.50 per cent or $19.02 for each $100,000 of urban residential assessment.
The bylaw will allow the city to set payment due dates for final tax bills on June 22 and Sept. 22, 2021, with final tax bills mailed later this month.
Property taxes are collected by the City of Burlington for the city, Halton Region and the Halton district school boards. For all three entities, the total combined tax levy is approximately $439 million.
While the city’s levy is $182 million, the city collects $141 million on behalf of Halton Region as well as $116 million on behalf of the Halton district school boards. The taxes levied for Halton Region and the Halton district school boards are remitted to them.
Back in March, Burlington city council approved a 2021 COVID-19 property tax deferral program to help provide relief to those facing financial hardships due to the ongoing pandemic.
Eligible residents and businesses that continue to experience financial hardships related to COVID-19 and are unable to pay property taxes by the scheduled due dates, may apply for a deferred pre-authorized monthly payment plan.
