If you head out to run an errand in Oakville and Burlington and suddenly come across Elisabeth Moss in her red Handmaid’s dress, don’t worry you’re not suddenly in some dystopian future and the Handmaid’s Tale.

The popular television series, based on the 1985 Margaret Atwood novel by the same name, is shot in various locations throughout Ontario.

And with the Emmy-winning series already confirmed for a fifth season on Hulu, there promises to be several other local handmaid’s sightings.

Despite the series being set in the U.S., it’s mainly filmed in Toronto, Hamilton and Cambridge. But other set locations include Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga and Brantford.

One famous scene in Season 2 has the handmaids gathered at Fenway Park in Boston, but the production team actually used Bernie Arbour Stadium in Hamilton.

Many scenes from the Handmaid’s Tale have been shot in Hamilton. The Waterford’s House – home of Gileadan Commander Fred Waterford– is located in the city, but in real life is known as the Grand Durand on Aberdeen Avenue.

The series stars Moss as the lead character June Osborne and takes place in what used to be Boston, Massachusetts and is now known as Gilead.

In the show, the U.S. Government has been overthrown by religious Christian fundamentalists after widespread infertility sweeps across the world. Women are brutally subjugated by power-hungry leaders.

Much of the plot revolves around Osborne’s desire to be reunited with her husband and daughter.
