Arrests made in series of Oakville and Burlington identity frauds

Three people are facing charges in connection with alleged identity theft incidents in Oakville and Burlington. 

Three people are facing charges in connection with alleged identity theft incidents in Oakville and Burlington. 

Halton police allege the multiple identity fraud incidents occurred during January and February of this year.

Police say a total of six purse thefts occurred grocery stores, with the victims being older adult females. Police say the victims’ financial cards were used following the thefts to purchase items and gift cards. The estimated total loss is over $2,500.

Police have charged Myriam Celis Munoz, 68, Luz Dary Garcia Celis, 51, and Carlos Andres Guiterrez Bernal, 22, with multiple theft and fraud-related offences.

All three of the accused were held for a bail hearing on Feb. 24, 2020.

Shoppers are reminded to pay close attention to their surroundings and keep a close eye on their valuables.

“Purses should be kept on your person at all times. Do not leave items such as purses and cell phones unattended in grocery carts while shopping,” police said in a news release. 

“Any fraudulent activity on your financial cards should be reported immediately to your bank and to police.”
