In the midst of a provincial election, it’s hard not to feel cynical about the people knocking on your door and promising you the moon on a variety of issues.

In the midst of a provincial election, it’s hard not to feel cynical about the people knocking on your door and promising you the moon on a variety of issues.

Sometimes in the midst of our frustration over the political process, we forget that no matter which party they choose to be with, many politicians strive to support their communities no matter what. In some cases, they are willing to step outside their traditional confines and do something for a good cause.

Seva Food Bank is an initiative of Sikhs Serving Canada which seeks to address challenges such as food security, poverty reduction and economic renewal. They operate two food banks uniquely catered to South Asian communities in Mississauga – one in Malton and the other on Wolfedale Road.

Last week, Seva held a charity gala at the Embassy Grand Convention Centre in Brampton. As it was a fundraising gala, the organizers had a rather unique segment during the program in order to raise money: a dance off between two politicians, federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, and the federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Navdeep Bains, a Peel area Liberal MP.

The condition for the dance off to take place was meeting a fundraising goal of $40,000 at the event. According to one of the organizers, the event raked in a whopping $50,000.

So Jagmeet Singh broke it down doing bhangra, barefoot no less.

The NDP leader is a bit more stylish and modern compared to his predecessors, so seeing him dancing is actually not that out of the ordinary.

Navdeep Bains, however, is a different story. I’m used to seeing the federal minister delivering a speech on the benefits of superclusters in the emerging digital economy, but apparently he can throw down some moves when he needs to.

At the end of the day, it was all about charity. If you’re interested in donating to Seva, you can send an online donation here.

Bains and Singh are two of the most prominent Sikh politicians in Canada right now. But hey, if this politics thing doesn’t work out, they may have a great back up career in dancing.
