UPDATE: Murder charges laid after house fire leads to woman’s death in Brampton

Police have laid charges following a house fire incident that turned into a homicide investigation today.

Around 4:00 a.m. on Friday (December 4), police, paramedics, and Brampton Fire responded to a fire at a home on Martindale Crescent in the McLaughlin Rd. and Williams Parkway area, where they found the residence fully engulfed.

Police say five occupants from the residence were located outside, including a 34 year old woman who was taken to local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 71 year old man, 11 year old, 9 year old, and 4 year old were found with no physical injuries.

“Located in the residence was a deceased woman believed to be 61 years of age,” said police.

Officers arrested 33 year old Brampton man Helder Vertentes-Arruda, who is charged with one count of First Degree Murder and five counts of Attempted Murder.

He appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Friday, December 4.

Police say all of the residence’s occupants are known to the accused.
