Top 5 Fish and Chips in Brampton

Published November 14, 2016 at 1:16 am

I always feel guilty after eating fish and chips in Brampton, but equally satisfied with how scrumptious the meal is. Deep-fried fish and potatoes make one amazing combo. But depending on where you grab this fisherman’s delight, it could be a hit or miss. Here’s a list of the top 5 fish and chips places in Brampton that are sure to get you hooked.

5) Heritage Fish & Chips

This pub-style restaurant offers a cozy atmosphere with quick service and hearty meals. Heritage has three locations in Brampton. I chose to try the Fisherman Drive spot, as it seemed fitting. The menu is huge with a variety of fish and different dishes to try. There’s also a take-out menu to browse if you feel like staying in. The waitress was very friendly and welcoming. I ordered the halibut, which was a little pricy at about $16, but the meal size was decent. The fish itself was delicious but overcooked, a little too crispy for my liking. The chips were good but more soft than crispy. Overall, the meal was satisfying and dining in was a pleasant experience.

4) Harbourside Fish & Chips

In comparison to a lot of other fish and chip spots on this list, Harbourside is relatively new. Located in the massive plaza at Kennedy and Sandalwood, Harbourside opened early in 2017 and has quickly worked its way into Bramptonians’ hearts…with good reason! First, Harbourside serves up everything from traditional fish and chips and breaded shrimp to poutines and a host of decadent deep-fried desserts. In terms of fish options, diners can enjoy Alaskan halibut, haddock, cod and salmon. The resto also offers a plethora of deep-fried shrimp options (including coconut shrimp), along with battered mushrooms, fried clams, crab cakes and scallops. If you want to keep things light, you can order your fish baked or grilled. The haddock and chips boasts a filling portion of melt-in-your-mouth fish, chips that hit the spot, and you can get ’em from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. as a lunch special for $8.75. Over all, a scrumptious serving of fish and chips that will not disappoint!

3) Ellen’s Bar and Grill

Even though this restaurant is a pub that hosts poker tournaments, their fish and chips are worth a try. If you’re not a fan of haddock, then Ellen’s may not be right for you as that is their only fish option. The meal comes with two pieces of haddock and chips for about $14. The waitress was friendly and the service was quick. The fish was a little too greasy, but tender. The batter was not too thick and was definitely delicious. Ellen’s chips are a little different than the other chips on this list, as they have some Cajun spices on them, making for a yummy change. Their tartar sauce is made in-house, but be warned–it’s heavy on the mayonnaise and dill. Overall, if you’re in the mood for beer and fish and chips, Ellen’s is a good choice.

2) Mimi’s Fish and Chips

Mimi’s wins the award having excellent fish and chips and the cheesiest poutine. This small mom and pop shop squeezed in the middle of a small plaza on Main Street stole the show with their method of cheese-ing their poutines. The cook layered shredded cheese on the bottom of the container, then throughout the rest of the french fries and gravy. Also of note, this is a fun poutine to eat for the twirlers out there. The poutine is so cheesy that you have to twirl the strings of cheese around your fork before even thinking of taking a bite. It’s quite honestly a cheese explosion. The fries have the right amount of crisp, the gravy is savoury but not too heavy and the small is a good portion for two people to share at a reasonable price. And Mimi’s has lots of upsides! They have a vast variety of food that you need to check out for yourself. In fact, I have four words for you that are totally unrelated to fish and chips: Deep-fried Mars bar.

They’re right when they say they have “the best fish and chips in town.” Located in a plaza on Main Street North, the restaurant has a lot to offer. Not only do they serve five different types of fish but also salads and appetizers. The staff wasn’t very talkative but knew how to make good fish and chips. I got the small halibut and chips meal for about $10. The fish was fresh, soft and the batter melted in my mouth. The fries were good but a little soft, so they might disappoint if you prefer a crispy texture. The dining area was huge and clean. If you’re planning on eating in or taking out, Henry’s is a great choice to satisfy your fish and chips craving.
