Doughnuts make the perfect snack. If you’re a fan of the traditional ones, you know that they’re often covered in sprinkles, filled with custard, or glazed in chocolate. In Brampton however, doughnuts are as diverse as the people living in the city. So next time you’re in the mood for a donut, have the traditional one–but also venture out and explore what doughnuts from different cultures taste like. Your taste buds will thank you.

Here are the top places to get some of the best doughnuts in the city.

5) Kosy Korner Donuts

I’ll be honest, I’ve driven by this place more times than I can count but never stepped foot into it. And with the name suggesting that this little shop at 147 Queen Street East has doughnuts, they do deliver some delicious treats. The restaurant is small with limited seating and serves all-day breakfast, brunch and, of course, doughnuts! I chose a vanilla coconut doughnut, which was a vanilla doughnut covered in coconut sprinkles. Biting into it, I noticed that it tasted fresh and wasn’t overly sweet, like I find most coconut flavoured things are. It was your usual doughnut shape and size and the perfect afternoon pick me up. So next time someone tells you that you can’t have doughnuts for breakfast, take them here. You won’t be disappointed.

4) Prem Sweets & Restaurant

A friend of mine once referred to gulab jamun as an Indian timbit. Based on that description, I knew I had to try one. When I saw the display case at Prem Sweets & Restaurant, I literally wanted to try one of everything, but knew I had to keep my focus on the gulab jamun. Be warned though, this milk solid-based South Asian sweet is super decadent. Biting into one, I was surprised at how sweet it was. It was much sweeter than what you would normally expect a donut to taste like, but it was equally delicious. The balls were soaked in a syrup, which tasted rose flavoured and left me wanting more after each bite. If you’re looking for a treat to satisfy your sweet tooth, hit up this local Brampton restaurant located on Gillingham Drive.

3) MacaronZ

This cute shop located in downtown Brampton is known for its macarons, but did you know they sell doughnuts too? Available daily in seven different flavours, such as vanilla birthday cake, cookies and cream, and pink coconut, these mini doughnuts are almost too cute to eat! Since these are “mini” I decided to try a few of them because, why not? I went for vanilla birthday cake, cookies and cream and chocolate toffee. The donuts were all made of the same vanilla-flavoured dough and I noticed that instead of being fried, these are baked, which is different from all the other doughnuts I tried. I find many pastries that are super cute don’t often taste as good as they look, but these are just as delicious as you think they would be. Between the three, it was tough to choose my favourite flavour, but I think the cookies and cream one was the best. To be honest, I ate all three myself. Don’t judge me, because when you try them, you’ll do the same.

2) Nova Grill & Bakery

Bola Berlim is the Portuguese version of a doughnut and the ones at Nova Grill & Bakery are massive. I’m talking size-of-a-baby’s-head massive! The doughnut is sliced into two halves, filled with a custard type cream, and sprinkled with powdered sugar. They have three flavours to choose from: chocolate, egg and sugar, and vanilla. I chose the latter and have been craving one since taking my first bite. The doughnut was very sweet, rich in flavour, and I got a bit of the filling in every bite I took. I’ll be honest when I say that I had to share my donut with a friend, because even though it was delicious, it was super filling. Regardless, at $0.95 per donut, these are perfect for when you want to indulge in a delicious treat.

1) EuroMax Foods

If you’re Polish, you’re no stranger to paczki. Pronounced “ponch-key,” these Polish doughnuts are deep-fried, glazed with icing sugar or sprinkled with powdered sugar and are often filled with different flavoured jams, such as plum, rose, or raspberry. They can even be filled with vanilla pudding. Biting into one is heavenly. They’re dense and you can taste the yeast in the dough, but trust me when I say they’re delicious. The one I chose had a generous amount of plum jam in the middle and had a delicate sugar glaze on top. The jam tasted a little tart, but the flavour balanced well with the sweet dough used for the doughnut itself. EuroMax Foods, a Polish grocery store located on Bovaird and Main, sells them for $1.00 each. If you’re looking for your paczki fix, make sure to go get yours early in the morning when they’re freshly baked — that’s when they’re the best!
