Gusto sits at the corner of Main and Church in downtown Brampton, and they’ll show you how to make a calzone. No, really, they roll and toss the dough where you can see it, so you can watch your beautiful calzone begin to come to life. Their dough is homemade, they have a decent cheese-to-sauce ratio, and they boast fresh sauce and fresh veggies. Gusto also has a wide variety of meat toppings like regular or beef salami, mild or hot Italian sausage, prosciutto, and ground beef, which is great for meat lovers. It’s about a 20 minute wait for one of their ‘zones which cost $7.90 each plus 75 cents per topping. Gusto’s calzones are best eaten right out of the oven while they’re hot and the cheese is still gooey.
If there’s one thing Tony and Jim’s takes the cake for, it’s their dough. Located in a plaza at McLaughlin and Flowertown since 1986, Tony and Jim’s is a friendly pizza joint, practically a staple in the area. Their calzones are made with fresh, homemade, original recipe dough, rolled and baked evenly to golden perfection. Their calzones are packed with melted mozzarella and a decent amount of toppings of your choice, and placed in a personal pizza box on top of some aesthetically pleasing, checkered wax paper. It’s about a 25 minute wait for one of these beauties at $7.75 plus 75 cents per topping. The only thing I would suggest is getting extra sauce on the side!
Pizza Fiamma’s calzones are long, soft, and packed with flavour, making them the third best on this list. Their sauce and dough are pretty impeccable, and it’s worth the 20 minute wait to sink your teeth into one of their calzones. Their dough is baked just right, their cheese stays gooey, and there’s an option to make your calzone spicy if you can handle it. With a kick of flavour and a free dipping sauce on the side, Pizza Fiamma has good calzones to-go, and I’d highly recommend trying one. Mine came to $9 with two toppings, grilled chicken and hot peppers, and the service was kind to top it off.
At Dixie and Clark beside Bramalea City Centre, Bramalea City Pizza fills their calzones with the perfect ratio of cheese, sauce, dough, and toppings. With calzones priced at $5.99 plus 80 cents per topping, I was mildly surprised at the high quality calzone and the quickest wait time on this list – a solid ten minutes. I had grilled chicken in mine, the chicken, the sauce, and the cheese were evenly spread inside, and there was a healthy amount of chicken in there. Their cheese stays gooey, their sauce is a good consistency, and their calzones are flavourful. Their service is also kind, and their calzones come with one free dipping sauce – I’d recommend their marinara. If you’re looking for a quick, quality calzone, Bramalea City Pizza is your spot.
Tucked into a plaza near Kennedy and Sandalwood, Venezia Pizza’s calzones top this list. Venezia is a family owned and operated, classic spot with home-grown Italian recipes and homemade sauce and dough. They boast freshness and quality, and it was clear that their calzone was baked with a sprinkle of love and care. Their ingredients taste fresh, they don’t skimp on the toppings, their cheese is gooey and generous, there’s a substantial amount of flavourful sauce inside, and their dough tears apart nicely. Their service is extremely kind, and they’re the cheapest option on this list, with each calzone priced at $5.49 plus 79 cents per topping. To top it off, it’s only a 15 minute wait for one of their creations.
