The initial decision to axe the funding for the satellite campus for Ryerson University in Brampton, as well as other universities slated for Markham and Milton from other institutions, was a shock to many people, including Ryerson.

During a special council meeting earlier this month, Ryerson came with city staff to reassure members of council that a university was still being planned and that they had not given up setting up shop in Brampton.

Ryerson’s deputy provost / vice-prevost Glenn Craney and Brampton CAO Harry Schlange said that the Chang School for Continuing Education is still on track to open its doors in Brampton starting in January 2019, as well as the $100 million Innovation Centre. In addition, they are currently lobbying Ottawa funding to keep the cybersecurity institute.

In a press release from the city, Ryerson announced that the Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education will officially begin offering courses in downtown Brampton in January 2019.

“This is a major step forward in the City of Brampton’s partnership with Ryerson,” said Mayor Linda Jeffrey. “I am very excited to welcome The Chang School, and with it, substantial opportunities for learning and innovation. Together, Brampton and Ryerson will change the face of education in our city.”

The first courses, in Cybersecurity via the certificate in Computer Security and Digital Forensics, will begin on January 14 and will run on Monday and Thursday evenings in the West Tower on George Street in downtown Brampton. Those courses are Computer Network Security (CKDF 110) and Security Architecture and Design (CKDF 140).

Brampton is also moving forward on activity to open a new business incubator in downtown Brampton in 2019, and Ryerson announced their intention to add their expertise in entrepreneur development and innovation to the mix. Their DMZ was recently recognized as the world’s number one university-based incubator.
