We live in a time when information is literally at our fingertips with just the push of a button or the click of a mouse. Big data is now a big thing when it comes to the emerging new economy and how we develop as a society.

In case you weren’t aware, the City of Brampton has an open data portal they dubbed ‘The Brampton GeoHub’, which allows Brampton city staff and the public to explore and download information about Canada’s ninth largest city.

If you click on the link in the preceding paragraph, you will be directed to the ‘city dashboard’ where a plethora of information can be found about Brampton. One such area is the city’s population growth from now until the year 2041.

Although the 2016 Census shows Brampton having just shy of 600,000 people in the city, the GeoHub data shows that Brampton has slightly over 617,000 people as of 2016.The city says the undercount (difference between their estimate of 617,994 residents versus Stats Canada’s 593,000) refers to the number of residents not recorded in the census.

Following 2016, the projections on populations are based on forecasts prepared by a consulting firm for the Region of Peel, which are subject to change, but here’s what Brampton has for population growth going forward:

  • 2021: 683,700 people

  • 2026: 755,710 people

  • 2031: 811,870 people

  • 2036: 853,940 people

  • 2041: 890,000 people

Between 2011 and 2016, the City of Brampton calculated that the city’s population has grown by 13 per cent and expected to grow by 275,700 between 2016 and 2041.

The average annual growth of 11,028 people contributes significantly to Peel Region’s average annual growth of 21,668 people.

Who knows in the coming decades what factors might affect their predicted outcome? With some crucial infrastructure projects in somewhat of a limbo status, such as the Ryerson university, will people be moving into Brampton at the pace it’s being projected?

Do you think Brampton will have almost 900,000 people by 2041?
