Street Parking Closures in Major Area of Brampton Soon

It’s about to get even busier in downtown Brampton.
If you drive or park in the downtown area, you’ll want to be aware that there is tunnel investigation work that’s happening on Queen and Main in February 2018, the City has advised.
As a result, drivers won’t be allowed to park in certain areas on certain days in the downtown core as follows:
- Parking lanes closed on the east side of Main Street between the CIBC bank and Vivian Lane for a four-day period February 5 to 8.
- Parking lanes closed on the north and south side of Queen Street between Main St and 100 m west of Main St. February 9 and 12, respectively.
Work is happening to investigate the structural integrity of the existing tunnel over a one-week period — weather permittiing — from February 5-12. Residents can expect to see test pits 5 ft x 5 ft to allow for a Structural Engineer to enter and assess the tunnel, according to the City.

This is all part of the Downtown Reimagined streetscaping project, so it’s a sign of exciting times ahead, and a lot of investigation and construction ahead.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the tunnel investigation that kicks off this week:
Main Street (east side) from CIBC to approximately Vivian Lane
- Work will be completed in the parking lane for a duration of four days between February 5 to 8
Queen Street (north side between Main Street and 100 m west of Main Street)
- Work will be completed in the parking lane for a duration of one day on February 9
Queen Street (north side between Main Street and 100m west of Main Street)
- Work will be completed in the parking lane for a duration of one day on February 12
Main Street and Wellington Street (intersection work)
- Work will be completed in the intersection for a duration of one day on February 10 (weekend work)
Sidewalks and business accesses will still be accessible throughout the investigation, and all work is weather permitting.
With downtown streetscape upgrades on the horizon, it’s no surprise that work is starting on Queen and Main in February 2018. The City of Brampton recently received approval from the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Chris Ballard, for the Downtown Brampton Streetscaping Environmental Assessment project, also known as Downtown Reimagined.
“With this decision, the City will move ahead with detail design phase for the streetscaping work and the preferred cross-section as per the Environmental Assessment, but with a condition that any loading zones or accessible parking spots are to be placed where feasible and shall not impede the cycle lanes,” the City wrote in a statement.
According to the city, Downtown Reimagined aims to:
- Create a street that will capitalize on the walkability and pedestrian capacity in the downtown
- Animate these streets and become a placemaking destination
- Bring together pedestrian, cyclist and motorists in a safe and sustainable manner
- Enhance amenities and transform the public realm
“The City of Brampton and the Region of Peel are committed to working with all stakeholders to minimize disruption and ensure a safe transition of traffic and pedestrian movement during the construction,” the City says.
Actual construction work is expected to begin in fall 2018 on the Sanitary Sewer and Watermain Works, and the streetscape improvements are scheduled for construction in 2019.
