Ryerson University, Algoma University and Sheridan College joined forces to present a proposal to Brampton council that will create new educational programs and expand current programming in the city.

In a special meeting on February 3, 2020, the presidents of Ryerson, Algoma and Sheridan, gave a presentation to Brampton council that outlined a plan and proposal which included a new medical school.

Ryerson’s Mohamed Lachemi, Algoma’s Asima Vezina and Sheridan’s Janet Morrison were present to represent all three schools at their presentation to Brampton council.

The presentation focused on leveraging higher education to drive Brampton’s economic and healthcare outcomes and proposed a new North-South partnership.

The goals for this joint programming, according to the presentation, are to build a new infrastructure in Brampton, which will aim to grow information technology jobs with a focus on cyber science and cybersecurity, addressing mental health, addictions and the growing opioid crisis as well as addressing hallway healthcare by “growing system capacity and focusing on digital health innovations.”

In the presentation, Lachemi explained the focus by asking the following, “how can higher education, both from the university and the college sectors, help the City of Brampton and Region drive economic prosperity for the city and the region, but also solve problems.”

While the new proposal aims to “leverage and expand existing initiatives and partnerships,” the preliminary plan also includes a new Brampton Centre for Health and Innovation and an Institute for the Prevention and Treatment of Mental Illness and Addictions.

This is in partnership with a hospital near Sault Ste. Marie, the location of Algoma’s main campus and eventually, the plan will also call for the expansion of the institute to support the “north-south corridor,” or the proposed Centre for Health and Innovation in Brampton.

Brampton currently has Sheridan College’s Davis Campus, along with smaller partnerships with Ryerson University’s Chang School of Continuing Education and Algoma University’s satellite campus.

Previously, there was a plan for Ryerson to bring their own satellite campus to Brampton, until October 2018, when the province pulled the funding.

Ryerson and the city of Brampton have since partnered together for a cybersecurity catalyst as well as a plan for a Ryerson innovation zone in the city.
