Two police cruisers collided with van during an early morning pursuit in Brampton, one that ended in a serious crash.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has now been called in because the driver sustained injuries when the van crashed into a wall on Williams Parkway near Kennedy Rd. The SIU investigates whenever an injury occurs which involves police.

According to the SIU, Peel Police were called just after midnight (December 16) with a report that a cube van was driving erratically along Rutherford Rd. Police say the tip they received indicated the driver may have been impaired.

Police located the vehicle and began pursuit which led to a collision with one of the cruisers near Kennedy Rd. and Church St. E.

The van then took off again and eventually collided with the second police cruiser before jumping the medium strip and smashing into the brick noise wall.

The driver of the van, a 33-year-old man, was extricated from the badly damaged vehicle and taken to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

The SIU says three forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case. One subject officer and three witness officers have been designated to be part of the investigation.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
