Downtown Brampton is a dense and constantly changing part of our city, and it has served at Brampton’s core since the 1800s. City leaders have been planning to change the look and feel of downtown Brampton entirely over the next few years, so here’s a sneak peek at what that might look like!

Downtown Brampton is already in the midst of some major changes – the new university and a centre for innovation are also taking shape in the downtown core. And streetscape upgrades are happening at around the same time.

Downtown Reimagined is the city’s plan to make downtown Brampton a more urban space. According to the downtown Brampton BIA, it will create an “aesthetically beautiful” area from Mill Street South to Chapel Street on Queen Street, and Nelson Street East to Wellington Street on Main Street.

“The aim is to bring together pedestrians , cyclists, and motorists in a safe and sustainable manner,” reads a recent release.

So, what could downtown Brampton look like in the near future?

Let’s take a look:

Queen and Main near the Rose Theatre is set to have more trees, and the roads and sidewalks will be redone, incorporating more walking space and bike lanes.

Similarly, you can see the trees, the bike lanes, and the repaved roads and wider sidewalks in this view of Wellington.

The Nelson rail overpass and surrounding area will undergo some significant changes.

Walkability and urbanization are major themes as you can see by this image of the four corners.

And a birds-eye view of Ken Whillans Square emphasizes new bike lanes and walking areas.

In the coming months, as the detailed design phase progresses, stakeholders will be presented with options for the “look and feel” of the design and will have an opportunity to provide feedback.

According to the city, Downtown Reimagined aims to:

  • Create a street that will capitalize on the walkability and pedestrian capacity in the downtown
  • Animate these streets and become a placemaking destination
  • Bring together pedestrian, cyclist and motorists in a safe and sustainable manner
  • Enhance amenities and transform the public realm

There is currently a demonstration of the streetscape upgrades under construction in front of 15 Queen St. W. The demo is designed to showcase:

  • A green cycle lane and updated road signs
  • A “clearway zone,” or a sidewalk and cafe/outdoor patio area
  • A furniture zone set to have trees in planter boxes and a bench after removal and relocation of the streetlight pole that’s there now

Streetscape upgrades are happening sooner than you think – construction is slated to begin in 2019.

There’s an open house happening on May 2 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and on May 3 from 6-8 p.m. in the City Hall Conservatory for anyone interested in learning more about the entire project.
