Peel getting millions in funding to protect vulnerable residents during COVID-19

Peel Region is getting millions in funding from the province in order to help protect vulnerable residents in the community, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Nina Tangri, MPP for Mississauga-Streetsville, recently announced that Peel will receive an additional $5,669,000 in social services relief funding.
Potential uses for the funding include improving the delivery of critical services, protecting homeless shelter staff and residents, renovating and purchasing shelter facilities, adding to rent banks, creating longer-term housing solutions, and supporting plans to prepare for potential future outbreaks and emergencies.
“Our government is responding to the ongoing needs of COVID-19 by providing more flexible funding to keep our vulnerable citizens safe,” said Tangri.
“We know that COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of having a place to call home, and this additional funding will help ensure everyone can find – and keep – a safe and secure roof over their head.”
The new funding is part of the province’s $510 million investment through the Social Services Relief Fund, which it launched in March to help protect vulnerable residents across Ontario.

The province says the fund will be used to support homeless shelters, create or renovate more than 1,500 housing units, and expand rent support programs.
Peel Regional Chair Nando Iannicca praised the province’s support for Peel, which he says was valuable and timely.
“Responding to COVID-19 and protecting lives requires the whole community working together, which means we need to be there for the vulnerable people who experience the health, social and economic impacts most acutely,” said Iannicca.
