Newfoundland doctors, nurses head to Brampton to help out at hospital

A second team of medical professionals from Newfoundland is on its way to help with the COVID-19 crisis in Brampton.
The three doctors and four nurses will be stationed at Brampton Civic Hospital and will join with another team from Newfoundland that arrived here last week.
Newfoundland Premier Andrew Furey said his province wants to help out beleaguered doctors and nurses in Ontario who have been treating COVID patients on an around-the-clock basis since last year.
Furey said the team already working at Brampton Civic has been welcomed with open arms.
“They recognize how stressed physicians and nurses are and this little bit of reprieve goes a long way to help the morale of the teams working so hard,” said Furey as the team was about to depart from a military hangar in St. John’s.
Furey went on to say that about 40 heath care workers from Newfoundland and Labrador have volunteered to come to Ontario to help out and as a result more teams may follow.

Nurse Michelle Murphy said she volunteered because she wanted to assist fellow Canadians any way that she could.
“If I can go there and give a nurse an extra five minutes on her coffee break, or I can hold the hand of somebody, or I can wipe the tear of somebody, then I’m helping,” she said.
The team will be in Brampton for up to two weeks.
