Movies and TV shows based on books inspiring Canadians to read more: survey

Do you believe books are the best source material for movies and TV shows? If so, you’re not alone.

A recent Ipsos poll found that 66 per cent of Canadians believe exactly this.

Additionally, according to the findings, 88 per cent of Canadians have read a book associated with a movie or TV series, while 34 per cent have even postponed watching a movie or TV series until they finished the book upon which it was based.

Further, likely unsurprisingly, 73 per cent of those who have watched a movie or TV series based on a book prefer the book.

Moreover, many Canadians enjoy experiencing the same story through multiple mediums—61 per cent of Canadians said after they finish a good TV series or movie based on a book, they look forward to reading it.

When it comes to reading books that become movies and TV shows, Gen Z is most likely to watch a show because they enjoyed the book upon which it’s based—97 per cent of Canadians between the ages of 18 and 24 said they have done this; compared to 83 per cent of Canadians between the ages of 18 and 44, and 75 per cent of Canadians between the ages of 45 and 70.

Based on the results, nearly half of Canadians—44 per cent—use TV shows and movies to learn about new books they might be interested in reading—28 per cent of respondents said watching movies or TV series based on books has compelled them to read more.

Young adults—those between the ages of 18 and 34—are nearly twice as likely to have felt compelled to read more as a result of watching TV shows and movies based on books than those over the age of 35 (39 per cent compared to 22).
