Metrolinx, with the approval of the province, has made significant changes to the Hurontario Light-Rail Transit (LRT) project that’s currently moving forward in Mississauga and Brampton.
Phil Vester, president and CEO of Metrolinx, says the provincially-run transportation organization made some changes to the scope of the Hurontario LRT in order to offer riders a “more convenient route” and “alleviate potential budget pressures on the project.”
The LRT, a $1.4 billion higher-order transit project being carried out by Metrolinx, will span 18 km and run from Port Credit GO at Lakeshore Rd. in the south to the Brampton Gateway Terminal at Steeles Ave in the north. The LRT will boast multiple stops and provide connections to the Port Credit and Cooksville GO stations, Mississauga Transitway, MiWay and Zum transit lines.
While some troubling whispers regarding the potentially uncertain future of the LRT emerged last year after the NDP could not get the provincial government to verbally commit to the project, it looks like construction is proceeding as planned—especially since Metrolinx is announcing tweeks rather than a significant delay or outright cancellation.
According to a news release issued by Metrolinx, some major changes to the planned LRT route include the removal of the Mississauga City Centre loop.

Instead, Metrolinx says it will create a direct in-and-out access route from Hurontario to the Rathburn stop, which is located next to the MiWay Transit Terminal. This is actually a big significant change, as it will eliminate three stops—bringing the total amount of stops down from 22 to 19—and shorten the route by a couple of kilometres.
Metrolinx also says it will defer the pedestrian bridge at the Cooksville stop to be included in a future transit-oriented development between the stop and GO station. There will also be changes to street-scaping along the corridor.
In response to a Twitter user, Metrolinx said that streetscaping changes will not affect the separated bike lanes that have been planned for the project.
“The project will include raised and separated cycle tracks north of the Queensway on both sides of Hurontario Street and a multi-use trail on the east side south of the Queensway,” Metrolinx wrote on Twitter.
Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said that the construction of the City Centre loop is crucially important.
“While the downtown loop may not be constructed as quickly as we would like, we will examine other funding opportunities to build it at a future date. Our main focus is to build transit and get people moving. This project remains the largest investment in our city’s history and we are pleased that the provincial government remains committed to fully funding the building of the LRT.”
The City of Brampton has also weighed in on the changes in a statement released after the announcement.
“The city understands that the changes announced by Metrolinx are necessary to deliver the overall project in a timely and efficient manner. The city is pleased to see that there are provisions in the amended contract to adapt to future changes, including a potential extension into Brampton.”
The city pointed out that the changes still allow for a future LRT extension north of Steeles Avenue to the Brampton GO station, which will be subject to further study and approvals. Several years ago, Brampton city council famously rejected plans to run the LRT further down Main Street and into Brampton’s downtown core, but with a new mayor and several council members in place, it’s possible that the route (or an alternate one) could be revisited–and soon.
The City of Brampton says it has been working with Metrolinx and the City of Mississauga on the implementation of the Hurontario LRT.
“Efficient transit is one of the city’s key priorities as defined by our residents. We are happy that this project has received a go-ahead,” says Mayor Patrick Brown.
“We are especially pleased to see the provision in the contract amendment for a potential extension into Brampton as we continue to explore all the possibilities for Phase 2, including the tunnel option that would lead to downtown Brampton GO.”
Metrolinx says it will work with the Ministry of Transportation and report back as the procurement process progresses.
The transit organization reiterated that changes have been made in order to reduce costs.
With these changes in effect, the LRT will run 18 kilometres (instead of the 20 it was initially supposed to span) and boast 19 stops in total.
The Hurontario LRT will link the GO stations at Port Credit and Cooksville, the Mississauga Transitway, Square One GO Bus Terminal, Brampton Gateway Terminal and key Zum and MiWay routes.
It should be completed by 2022.
