Massive Annual Christmas Celebrations Set to Hit Brampton This Weekend

There are three main components to Brampton’s annual Christmas events, the Christmas Market, the Tree Lighting, and the Santa Claus parade. Bundled together, they’re set to make for a very exciting weekend from Friday, November 17-Sunday, November 19, 2017.

Here’s what you need to know: 

Christmas Market

Brampton’s Christmas Market 2017 is coming back to downtown Brampton for its sixth year on Friday, November 17 from 4-10 p.m., Saturday, November 18 from 12-9 p.m., and Sunday, November 19 from 12-6 p.m.

Every year, a mass of Bramptonians (and likely even people from outside the city) come out to Garden Square for the festivities, with all of the holiday-themed activities and events Brampton’s Christmas Market promises.

For the first time ever, the always popular Christmas Market is expanding. Usually, the market happens in Garden Square, but this year, the Christmas Market is expanding beyond the square to include the Conservatory and Daily Times Square at City Hall.

That’s right – part of the Christmas Market will take place indoors at City Hall Conservatory this year!

There’s set to be a free marshmallow roasting, a DJ in the Square, movies on the big screen, carollers, and even the chance to snap some pet-friendly pics with Santa and Mrs. Claus. 

In terms of vendors, there will be several, including food and retail. Some of those include Gunn’s Hill Artisan Cheese, COBS bread, Say la Vee, and Tiny Tom’s Donuts.

Tree Lighting

Mark your calendars, Brampton, because our massive Christmas tree in Ken Whillans Square will be lit on Friday, November 17, 2017. The entire ceremony is slotted for 6-8 p.m. in downtown Brampton, concurrent to the Christmas Market.

The tree will be lit at 6:20 p.m., and there will also be a toy drive, and such entertainment as a fire performance, letters to Santa, and an LED hula hoop performance.

Here’s a fun fact: Brampton’s Christmas tree is a spruce that stands at 60 feet tall.

According to the City, a whopping estimated 10,000 people showed up for Brampton’s tree lighting in 2016!

In fact, the tree lighting is one of Brampton’s biggest events. It’s so big that it made the Festivals and Events Ontario Top 100 List alongside CELEBrampton, Brampton Canada Day Celebrations, the Jambana One World Festival.

Here are the road closures, according to the City:

These roads will be closed from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., on November 17:

  • Wellington Street West from George Street South to Main Street South

These roads will be closed from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., on November 17:

  • Main Street from Wellington Street to Theatre Lane/Nelson Street
  • Queen Street from George Street to Chapel Street

Santa Claus Parade

This year, the Brampton Board of Trade has announced that the annual Santa Claus Parade will take place on Saturday, November 18, at 5 p.m., concurrent to the Christmas Market

You’ll want to pick a good spot along the route and get there early to set up camp. The parade starts at Ken Whillans and Sproule, and runs along Main all the way up until Elgin, lasting about an hour and a half in total.

It’s typically more crowded at the beginning and at the end of the route, though, so if you’re late, you may want to stick to the Gage Park area to catch the parade.

Now, the event has record crowds! In 2012 alone, Police estimated a crowd of about 160,000 people, and that number grows yearly.

  • Ken Whillans Drive from Vodden Street to Church Street East
  • Sproule Drive from Main Street North to Ken Whillans Drive
  • Church Street East from Union Street to Scott Street

These roads will be closed from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., November 18

  • Main Street North from Queen Street to Theatre Lane/Nelson Street
These roads will be closed from 3:30 to 8:00 p.m., November 18:
  • Main Street North from Vodden Street to Theatre Lane/Nelson Street
  • Main Street South from Queen Street to Charolais Boulevard
  • Queen Street from George Street to Centre Street

These roads will be closed from 12:00 to 10:00 p.m., November 18

  • Elgin Drive from Mill Street South to Main Street South
