April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, so Peel Police will be conducting a week long Distracted Driving blitz starting on Friday April 12th lasting until the following Friday April 19th.
The blitz will be in effect on Hurontario street and Steeles Avenue.
Distracted Driving initiatives have been designed by the Peel Regional Police Road Safety Services to help reduce injuries and prevent incidents on the roads. The blitz will target behaviours that put drivers, passengers and pedestrians at risk on the roads.

There are many different things a driver could be doing that counts as distracted driving. The most common offense is the use of handheld devices while driving. This usually includes communication/entertainment devices such as phones, but can also include some screens.
A common misconception is that it is only an offense when driving, and not when stopped at a red light or stuck in traffic. No matter what the circumstances are using a handheld device would fall under distracted driving.
Fines are also very steep. First time convictions can cost drivers up to $1000, three demerit points and 3-day drivers license suspension.
Peel Police hope this blitz will educate drivers on the dangers of distracted driving, improve awareness on the roads and reduce the number of collisions due to distracted driving.
