It’s no secret that car insurance is a hot topic in Brampton – we have the highest car insurance rates across Ontario, after all. Now, in the thick of the provincial election, the Ontario Liberals have indeed made a bold promise for auto insurance in Brampton and beyond. 

Last week, MPP Harinder Malhi was in town to announce that the Liberals vow to stop auto insurance rate hikes based on where you live. 

That could mean the end of skyrocketing car insurance rates in Brampton.

If you live in Brampton, you know that everyone and their uncle complains about driving here, and the fact that car insurance is expensive is no surprise to you. Whether or not driving in Brampton is really that bad is up for debate, but one thing is for sure – Brampton drivers are paying an estimated premium of $2,268 on car insurance, according to Kanetix.ca.

While the province has already promised to lower car insurance rates “over time” with the Fair Auto Insurance Plan – which would affect Brampton – increasing auto insurance rates are a problem. 

Rates have already increased by 2.23 per cent in the first quarter of 2018 in Ontario, according to the latest data from The Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO).

With this announcement, the Liberals are promising to stop insurance companies from using postal codes to calculate insurance premiums.

Theft and fraud in a particular area are two major factors that contribute to higher auto insurance rates, according to the Aviva Insurance Company of Canada.

According to the Globe and Mail, the Liberals don’t currently have a projection for how many people this might affect or how much money drivers could save on auto insurance.

“According to Ms. Malhi, the specifics of how to enact this policy would have to wait until after the June 7 election,” reads the article.

As for the other parties’ takes on making it cheaper to drive in Ontario, the Tories have promised to lower the gas tax, while the NDP says that road tolls are unfair.

With the provincial election just two weeks away, the latest polls show the NDP is gaining ground, while the Tories are stalling.
