There are only four times a year when Brampton residents can use short-range fireworks – Victoria Day, Canada Day, Diwali, and New Year’s Eve – and now, one of them is upon us!

If you want to use fireworks on Diwali, you’ll want to take a look at the rules for short-range fireworks in Brampton.

Short-range fireworks are allowed on private property without the need for a permit in Brampton for Diwali on Tuesday November 6 and Wednesday November 7.

A new fireworks and licensing bylaw was approved by council back in 2016.

The fireworks are those that tend to travel less than three metres, or 10 feet, when they are set off; so for example: fountains, wheels, ground spinners and sparklers.

All other rocket-type fireworks are banned by the City of Brampton. The city is also reminding residents that fireworks are not allowed to be used on the street, sidewalks, within city parks or on municipal or school properties.

The city has issued the follow safety measures for anyone using fireworks on their property:

  • You must have a container of water or a hose line that’s filled with water available to extinguish fireworks.

  • You must never light a firework or hold a lit firework in your hand, other than a sparkler.

  • After using sparklers, place them in a container of water to fully cool before disposal.

  • Allow all fireworks to fully cool before disposal.

  • Fireworks vendors must complete an annual course before they are considered licensed.

Last year Brampton introduced a mandatory annual course for fireworks vendors before they can be licensed to sell.

A list of those vendors will be posted on the city website closer to Diwali but if residents have any concerns about the use of any prohibited fireworks that you may see, please call 311.
