A Brampton man was recently scammed out of over $8,000 after falling victim to a phone scam.

According to a GoFundMe page, the victim, Ganesh Khatry had received multiple calls from people posing as police to warn that his SIN card had been compromised and that multiple bank accounts had been created by someone else.

As a result of the phone scam, Khatry was left with a total of $9 in his bank account.

A GoFundMe page was then created on his behalf, by family friends Conrad and Eliza Rizal.

According to Rizal, Khatry, a Walmart employee, initially received a call on October 1, from someone who was posing as Brampton police.

According to Rizal, as a new immigrant from Nepal, Khatry was worried about the potential of losing his savings and was caught off guard when he received the phone call in the middle of work.

As a result of the phone call, Khatry was told to leave his location without notifying anyone and withdraw all funds from his bank accounts.

Khatry then deposited them into a Bitcoin machine, where he was told his funds would be “safeguarded” until he received a new SIN card.

The following day, after realizing he had fallen victim to a scam, Khatry, now without savings or a job, filed a report with Peel Police.

Since the donation page was set up on October 11, it has raised a total of $20,790.

“Thank you so much to all the people who donated and shared this. I am overwhelmed with happiness and gratitude. God bless you and your families!” states the latest update on the page, written by Eliza.
