At a Special Meeting of Council on January 22, 2020, Brampton city council approved a new work plan as well as an extensive community engagement strategy that will support the Brampton 2040 Plan.

This is the city’s new official plan and the Vision depicts a more sustainable, urban and vibrant future for Brampton.

The Brampton 2040 Vision was endorsed by council in May 2018 after the public’s engagement in the fall of 2017.

The Term of Council Priorities outline the necessary steps that will move Brampton towards this future, making the Brampton 2040 Plan a critical part of the process.

This new Official Plan will provide direction to make sure that all of the planning, projects and development are working together in order to make the Brampton 2040 Vision come to life.

Brampton has retained WSP Canada Group Ltd to lend multidisciplinary expertise in the areas of Land Use Planning, Policy Planning and Urban Design, Community and Stakeholder Engagement, Sustainability, Transportation, Environmental Planning, Parks and Open Space Planning and Arts and Culture Planning and Heritage Preservation to assist city staff with the creation of the Brampton 2040 Plan.

The work plan, which was approved today, contains five phases that will extend over the next two years into 2022.

It will have multiple opportunities for residents to engage with the city and shape the future of Brampton’s growth.

The City’s current Official Plan was adopted by Council in October 2006 and partially approved by the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) in October 2008.

“The City of Brampton is excited to launch a community-wide engagement process for building the city’s next official plan that is focused on setting the stage for the City’s growth both now and in the future,” said Mayor Patrick Brown.

“Our multi-year plan will ensure that an exciting community vision is translated into results that benefit everyone in Brampton.”

The plan has been broken out into five phases.

Phase one will include the Brampton 2040 Speaker Series, which are intended to build awareness of city planning in the community and allow residents to become involved in the implementation plans.

In Phase two, an engagement program called the 2040 Vision and Identifying Data Gaps will seek input to test the Brampton 2040 Vision and identify any data gaps that may exist.

Phase three will be Community Structure Workshops. This will be a phase with engagement as the city will continue to seek input as they test and confirm the community structure outlined in the vision.

Phase four is called Discussion Papers and Draft Policy Directions; an engagement program that will seek input on the core topic areas (seven core Vision Statement Areas of the Brampton 2040 Vision) that will inform the direction of the plan.

Phase five will be the final phase called Final OP Policies. During this Phase, Brampton will seek input on the draft policies contained within the Draft Brampton 2040 Plan.

The work plan and community engagement opportunities that are outlined in the strategy, are designed to deliver a forward-looking Official Plan that reflects the vision and overall process.

David Barrick, Chief Administrative Officer said, “The Official Plan will provide more context for City staff to do the work of city-building in a way that maximizes the opportunities to realize our Council’s and residents’ vision for Brampton. The City is looking forward to working with residents and stakeholders to bring us closer to Brampton 2040.”
