At an August 5 conference, Mayor Patrick Brown discussed additional measures to help cope with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in the City of Brampton.

During the announcement, the mayor further discussed the importance of physical distancing and councillor Jeff Bowman provided details on the reasons behind the latest fines issued within the City of Brampton. 

Last week, 16 charges were laid in nine separate incidents between July 14-20.

Among these charges, six were under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA) and 10 were for the new face-covering bylaw.

Today (August 5), Bowman stated that the City also had 58 face-covering infraction complaints bringing their total now to 240.

Acknowledging that many Brampton residents have been doing their part by wearing masks, Bowman advised people to report those who are not adhering to the mandatory bylaw. 

“If you see people wherever you are when you’re out, please report it to the owner of the establishment that you’re in,” said Bowman.

“Whether it be a bar or a department store, they are responsible for making sure that their employees and themselves and anybody that comes into the store is protected.”

Additionally, Bowman encouraged residents to call 311 to report these incidents.

“We are still enforcing the mandatory face mask bylaw and we will be continuing to do that as long as we are still in the emergency state,” said Bowman.

Bowman concluded by thanking the City of Brampton and saying that collectively, residents have done a great job by getting to Stage 3 of the province’s reopening plan.

“If all goes well, pretty soon we will see the number of charges down to zero. That’s what we’re all looking for and that’s what we’re all hoping for,” said Bowman.

As of July 10, the City of Brampton approved a mandatory mask bylaw.

According to the bylaw, those not adhering may face fines of up to $100,000.
