City Council To Invest Over $7 Million In Brampton University

Since 2010, Algoma University has been offering undergraduate business programs in Downtown Brampton. Recently, the university has expanded its Brampton school to add 6,000 square feet. Algoma University has stated that they will further expand its facility with construction beginning this fall.
Brampton City Council has stated that they will invest $7.3 million in grant funding spread over three years to facilitate a planned second phase expansion of Algoma University’s academic programming and facilities within Garden Square.
“This investment is consistent with our term of council priorities and Brampton 2040 Vision and moves us towards creating a city of opportunities. Brampton is committed to building long-term relationships with recognized and well-respected education partners on solutions that meet the needs and advance the aspirations of our city and future students,” says Mayor Patrick Brown.
The university itself will contribute $27 million to the project over the same period.
“This investment will increase our campus footprint and accelerate the university’s growth which will contribute to enhancing the vibrancy of the downtown and the retention of talent in the city,” says Asima Vezina, the president and vice-chancellor of Algoma University.

The funding will enable Algoma University’s enrolment capacity to grow to 1,000 students by 2023.
The university will also offer degree and certificate offerings in Computer Science, Psychology, and Community Economic and Social Development by Fall 2020. These new programs, along with the future programming in Law and Justice and Social Work, will be housed within the Centre for Social, Cultural & Economic Innovation.
The institution strives to grow overall enrolment across all campuses to 3,000 students by 2023-24.
