At a meeting that occurred last Wednesday (March 24), Brampton City Council approved a program that would help those struggling financially due to COVID-19.
Dubbed the Property Tax Payment Deferral Program, Brampton residents would be permitted the option to defer their 2021 property taxes until December 15.
The Program, which is by application, is open to both residential and business property owners and is intended to assist those in need of payment flexibility for the 2021 tax year.
Each year, the City issues two tax bills—the Interim Tax Bill issued in January and the Final Tax Bill in June. Those who wish to defer payments must apply online by April 15 (those who defer the interim Tax Bill will also have their Final Tax Bill automatically deferred.
For residents to be eligible, their property tax account must not have tax arrears prior to March 2020, and they must pay property taxes directly to the City of Brampton and not through a mortgage company.
Additionally, those who qualify for the Property Tax Payment Deferral Program and are currently enrolled in the City of Brampton’s Pre-Authorized Tax Payment (PTP) Plan, will be removed from the PTP Plan—to be reinstated in the PTP Plan, they must submit a new application before for the 2022 Interim Tax Bill deadline.
