The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board has announced its top secondary school scholars for the 2020-21 school year.

The top Ontario Scholars from Brampton are Kirsten Octavo and Catherine Rodriguez from St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, both of whom graduated with an average of 99.17 per cent.

Octavo has enrolled in the nursing program at Ryerson University and Rodriguez has enrolled in the life sciences program at the University of Toronto.

“Congratulations to Kirsten and Catherine for their remarkable achievements despite a very challenging and unusual school year,” said Marianne Mazzorato, the board’s director of education.

“It takes tremendous dedication, focus and commitment on the part of these students to achieve this level of academic success. It is also a reflection of their teachers, parents and guardians who inspired and encouraged them to reach for the top.”

To be an Ontario Scholar, students must achieve an average of 80 per cent or higher on their top six Grade 12 courses. This year, 4,845 DPCDSB graduates earned this distinction.

“This year, we recognize our 7,095 DPCDSB graduates who have fulfilled the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations and are ready to take on a new journey outside the familiar walls of their schools,” said Mazzorato. “We are extremely proud of each and every one of them.”
