A Brampton teenager who made headlines a year ago with his wish to meet basketball superstar LeBron James, has died.

Corey Groves, 17, succumbed to cancer late last month, according to family members.

When Groves was diagnosed with an aggressive sarcoma cancer in the summer of 2019, the Children’s Wish Foundation arranged for the Los Angeles Lakers fan to meet his favourite player.

That meeting took place on Christmas Day last year when Groves and James met before a Lakers home game at the Staples Centre.

“I just want to shake his hand,” said Groves just before the meeting took place.

And that he did as James readily agreed to grant the wish.

“He was blessed to have met a lot of great, amazing people who once got to know him, loved and appreciated him for who he was, the strong, intelligent, funny good guy forever in our hearts,” a family member posted on Instagram.
