Like many celebrations during the pandemic, National Public Works Week will be a little more low key than it was in previous years, but that doesn’t mean the City of Brampton won’t acknowledge and appreciated the staff who contribute to keeping the community safe, clean and moving each day.

There are about 700 Brampton employees who are part of the Public Works and Engineering team, which provides critical and essential work on things like sidewalk, road and bridge maintenance; signal and streetlight management; spring cleanup; snow removal; catch basin cleaning; street sweeping and more.

“National Public Works Week is an opportunity to educate the public on the role public works plays in our daily lives,” said Brampton mayor Patrick Brown. “From planning, to building, managing and maintaining – our public works professionals support the key operations that are at the heart of our community.”

Prior to COVID-19, the City of Brampton celebrated NPWW by building awareness of how public works services affect the community every day, with activities held throughout the week. While there are no in-person events this year, there is a NPWW colouring sheet for children which can be coloured, photographed and posted on social media.

“This year’s theme is Stronger Together. Over the past year, our public works team has demonstrated resiliency,” said Wards 1 and 5 regional councillor Paul Vicente, chair of Public Works and Engineering. “They’ve adapted to change and gone above and beyond to maintain service levels to ensure the health and safety of our community.”
