It’s no secret that Brampton is full of talent, and now, a Brampton native is going to the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea!

Bramptonian Dave Greszczyszyn is indeed headed to his first winter olympics this week.

The 38-year-old will compete on Canada’s skeleton racing team, where athletes sled head-first down an ice track.

Eleven years ago in 2007, Greszczyszyn was a science and physical education teacher at Mayfield Secondary School in Brampton. At the age of 27, he switched gears and turned to skeleton.

When Greszczyszyn first tried skeleton, it was on a weekend trip to Calgary, where he borrowed a student’s ski suit. According to his profile on the official Canadian team’s olympic website, on his first time sliding from the top of the track, the suit’s legs and elbows tore. He ended up buying his student a new suit and “falling in love” with the sport!

Some time later, he left his teaching position to pursue skeleton, moved to Calgary for training, and competed in his first North American Cup races.

In terms of athletic prowess, the passionate Bramptonian has finished second in the Europa Cup, third in the Intercontinental Cup circuit, and he won a spot on the World Cup team about four years ago.

He earned his first World Cup medal in Winterberg, Germany, and was Canada’s top-ranked man at the 2015, 2016 and 2017 World Championships, highlighted by his 10th place finish in 2017.

A total of 24 athletes are headed to the Winter Olympics this year, competing in bobsleigh and skeleton. Joining Greszczyszyn on the team for men’s skeleton are Barrett Martineau of Calgary and Kevin Boyer of Edmonton.

The Winter Olympics are happening from February 9-25, 2018. Skeleton will be held from February 15-17.
