It’s always nice to hear when a city like Brampton is recognized for doing something positive. Now, the city has won two award for…apparently being a smart city.

Brampton has been honoured with two Smart 50 Awards for transformative projects that “contribute to resident quality of life through continuous improvement of city operations.”

The Smart 50 Awards, in partnership with Smart Cities Connect, Smart Cities Connect Foundation, and US Ignite, annually recognize global smart cities projects to honour the most innovative and influential work.

Awards were divided under five categories:

The two awards Brampton has earned come from the following two city projects, under the smart mobility and urban operations categories:

  • The Automatic Vehicle Monitoring (AVM) system allows Brampton Transit to monitor vehicles’ health status to increase the reliability and state-of-good repair of the city’s bus fleet. The system improves service reliability, while also improving the rider experience, by preventing mechanical breakdown and reducing unexpected road calls.

  • The Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) system is specific to all other city vehicles (not buses or fire trucks), tracks vehicle movement and gathers environmental data to improve service delivery, including winter operations and by-law enforcement.

“Smart City technology helps a large urban environment like Brampton to build solutions around our citizens. The use of the AVL system in recent winter events allows staff to effectively manage the City’s response during a storm – it helps us determine which areas require service, the type or priority of service, and identify the vehicles providing the service. It’s another way we’re able to keep Brampton moving, safely,” Mayor Patrick Brown said in a statement.

Other Canadian jurisdictions on the list for various awards from Canada were Edmonton, Calgary, Simcoe County and York Region.

They joined various US cities and a number of international localities such as Lisbon (Portugal), Dubai, Carnival Cruises (for creating a Smart City experience at sea) and Darmstadt (Germany).
