At an October 21 conference, Mayor Patrick Brown and Peel’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Lawrence Loh, discussed additional measures to help cope with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in Brampton.

Last week, Loh stated that while Peel Public Health continues to track transmission, Brampton’s local hospital has started to see more COVID-19 cases arrive.

At the conference on October 22, Mayor Brown confirmed that the number has increased to a total of 19 patients that are currently being treated for COVID-19 at Brampton Civic, with four of those patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“Our healthcare capacity still stands pretty strong, but there has been an uptick in recent weeks, so we need to be mindful of that and I think it’s one of the reasons that there’s been some more recent restrictions,” said Brown.

During Dr. Loh’s announcement, he further emphasized the importance of shrinking social bubbles and reminded the public to stay home as much as possible as viral activity in Brampton and Peel remains “consistent and high.”

“We are now 10 days into the new reality of a modified Stage 2 in Peel,” said Loh.

“While it’s too early to see the impacts of the province, our accounts over the last 10 days show that the decision came at the right time to help stop further spread.”

“I recognize that our vigilance has weighed heavily on our well-being, our sense of security and the opportunities that we’ve had, but I encourage you to remember that that weight isn’t as heavy as the lives and things that we would have lost without these sacrifices,” concluded Loh.
