Brampton Hockey seeks new home, high-calibre training centre

If Brampton Hockey’s vision comes to pass, it won’t be too long before high-calibre athletes in Brampton will be able to hone their talents at South Fletcher’s Sportsplex.
Glenn McIntyre, president of Brampton Hockey Inc. (BHI) made the pitch to city councillors at last week’s Committee of Council meeting. BHI currently has its office in the Flower City complex, but they’d like a new home.
“We take a lot of ice time at South Fletcher’s,” said McIntyre, “And the old Don Cherry’s Restaurant has just been sitting empty upstairs there for six or seven years, maybe longer. It makes sense that space to be better utilized.”
McIntyre would like to see BHI move their offices full-time to South Fletcher’s. In addition, the plan would see the organization team up with an outside vendor to bring a high-performance training centre to the approximately 5,000-sq.-ft. space.
“The idea is, we’d manage the space, and our partner would offer the expertise to the young athletes,” said McIntyre. “And it’s not just for hockey players. If you’re a young athlete in baseball or soccer or anything, and you’re looking for additional, off-season training, this would be open to you.”
Because BHI is a non-profit organization, McIntyre said fees for the training centre would be reasonable.

“We’ll just be looking to cover costs. It won’t cost thousands of dollars for kids to take advantage of this facility.”
Brampton council referred the request to city staff for further consideration.
